Pentax Supercharges Latest OptioS

It’s slim, it’s light and it’s the latest conundrum of numbers that Pentax has managed to cram behind its “Optio” brand. Introducing the OptioS5z

As the code rather gives away, this is the latest in the company’s OptioS range of slim and light digital cameras. It cuts a svelte figure (83 x 55 x 21.5mm) and is suitably malnourished at 105g. The five megapixel benchmark has been surpassed (technically it is 5.25 megapixels), and the defacto 2.5in screen size pulls out a few tricks, showing off a 100 per cent field of view and clarity of 110,000 pixels.

Video mode presses all the right buttons (sorry, bad pun) with a 640 x 480 shooting mode and 30fps frame rate, while Mpeg4 compression means you should extra footage out of your SD memory cards. Pentax has also managed to throw in a few basic editing optio{ns} (again, my apologies), namely cut, stitch, divide and “save as still image”.

For convenience a quick button can be assigned to perform any function you find yourself using regularly and the “Fn” key – more usually seen on notebook keyboards – makes an appearance enabling buttons to double up with two different commands.

Finally a “Comment Space” function can leave a blank space at the bottom or to the left of printed images allowing users to scribble nostalgic messages such as “Derek Hammered” or “Tracy Sunburnt”.

Out towards the end of this month, the OptioS5z has a guide price of £249.99 including VAT. Making a choice in the crowded world of digital cameras just became even more difficult.
