Panasonic Lumix Phone Coming

Panasonic's Lumix camera brand has enjoyed success after success in recent years, but the Japanese are looking to take it to places with the upcoming Lumix Phone. Currently the only evidence of its existence is a teaser site on the company's Japanese website, but the folks at Engadget managed to translate what little details exist.

With a 13.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, the Lumix Phone probably has more MPs than it really needs, but a 3.3-inch LCD and 146-gram body sound impressive. Dimensions are 116mm tall, 52mm wide, and 17.7mm thick, which will likely make it a chunky device - by contrast, the iPhone 4 is 9.3mm thick.

That's about as much as we know now, but more details are promised for 5th October, and given Panasonic's photography prowess we're expecting good things.

Watch this space.

This could be good... wonder what the operating system will be like? (Can't imagine asking that question before the advent of Android actually since it would really have been a case of wait and see/hope for the best.) Perhaps it'll be targeted more at the 'wish my compact camera' could make calls market rather than those playing with apps though, which makes it all the more interesting.

The high MP count and relatively chunky design could well be indicative of the presence of an optical zoom, which would make it all the more interesting as Panasonic ought to know how to make a good camera. If the phone's lacking good optics and Panasonic don't get the image processing right then the 13.2 million pixels will count for nothing.

Maybe this will be the cameraphone to finally get me to leave my k800i in the drawer. I hope so!

Here's hoping Panasonic's flat screen TV designers have been kept well away from it.
