Palm Pre Gets Immediate Software Update

Apple isn't the only one which can dole out the new firmware...

Palm has already updated the Pre following its 6 June US launch. Version 1.0.2 - a zero day 67MB patch - was quickly pushed to users over the air (OTA) and is said to improve overall system stability (don't they always?) and tweak a number of the native apps, including a new alarm clock.

Quite what more serious issues v1.0.2 corrected (but Palm didn't want to mention) remain a mystery though a minority of customers have reported various problems including WebOS crashes and intermittent loss of user data. This sounds par for the course to us for a new handset and, in particular, a new mobile OS - especially one as ambitious as WebOS.

In related news US carrier Sprint is reporting 50,000 Pres were sold during the opening weekend, a long way sort of the circa 150k Apple first generation iPhones but 1. The cult of Apple knows no boundaries (rightly or wrongly) and 2. Palm says stock shortages severely impacted potential sales, which seems reasonable to us.

In short, the Palm Pre continues to intrigue after making some very strong First Impressions. Let's get it over here ASAP guys...
