A PSP to TV accessory surely should have arrived from Sony by now, but in its ongoing absence another manufacturer has stepped up to the plate.
Asian Toy Source, a video game accessory specialist based in Hong Kong, has released the first prototype shot of its “PSP On TV” which – as the name suggests – lets owners play their games and movies on any television or projector screen.
Particularly odd to look at, the rectangular cone shaped device works by grabbing the image off the PSP’s LCD screen using a digital capture device (like a video camera’s CCD) which converts the image into electrons, then outputs the signal to any television. To concentrate on the image, the company has used a “focus tube” which is similar in shape to the rear of a conventional television or CRT computer monitor.
“We need this special shape to be able to capture the image properly. It is a fairly technical device, and due to the closed design it doesn't have any light coming in from outside, so the video output is of extremely high quality," said Asian Toy Source chief technical bigwig Chow Wing Lau.
Importantly for warranty purposes, the PSP On TV requires no internal modification of the PSP to work. It simply clips onto the front of the console’s screen and two finger screws are tightened near the USB port. Suddenly, in theory (we haven’t had our mitts on one yet), you’ve turned your portable gaming console into a teeny multimedia entertainment centre.
Of course, before we add any undue gloss to the PSP On TV, it is vital to point out that it is a product which will live or die on its image quality. History could be on the company’s side though, since a similar style of accessory it made for the Gameboy Advance three years ago sold in excess of 200,000 units.
There are a tonne of grabs, videos and downloads on PSP On TV official site (linked below), which will appease eager punters until the product ships in three to four weeks. RRP as been set at $99.99 and the words intriguing, promising and quirky feel particularly apt adjectives to describe it.
