PSP Firmware Adds Podcasts, Music Formats

It is a well known fact that good and bad things tend to come together. It’s the pleasure/pain principle, Karma, Yin & Yang and that’s very much the case - depending on the legality of your games collection - with PSP firmware updates.

The problem is, with each revision the temptation to just step up and toe the line (thanks Archangel ;)) becomes ever greater. The newly announced Version 2.7 is a perfect case in point. There’s genuine functionally improvements such as support for Podcasts, additional audio file formats including WMA and – shock and very much horror – ACC (Sony you little iPod closet queen) as well as Flash web content created with Adobe Macromedia.

Furthermore, the new upgrade means PSPs can now act as receivers for Sony’s LocationFree TV. LocationFree, for those used to sitting at the back of the class sporting pointy caps (we’re talking Dunces, not Klu Klux Klan), is a new way of getting your tele fix. In a nutshell, instead of going to your trusty haunted fishtank TV is streamed via your home TV tuner to where you are. From here you can watch, time shift, record and schedule future viewings. It kicks off in May and we hooligan Brits, the cowardly French, warmongering Germans, chocolate guzzling Belgians and stoned Dutch will all benefit.

So all in all, despite the evil additional DRM that it goes without saying is attached, 2.7 looks rather worthwhile. So wrestle your inner Ying, body check your outer Yang and head over here to grab it.
