PS3 To Cost No More Than Xbox 360

Sony has a strong tradition of gate crashing. Take a look at the way it fires back every time HD DVD makes an announcement. So the day after the launch of the Xbox 360 should we really be shocked to hear a sudden announcement about PS3 pricing? I think not.

Keen to keep the console at the forefront of gamers’ minds during such Microsoft centric days, Sony big boss Howard Stringer has revealed the PS3 will cost between $300 and $400 when it arrives in mid 2006.

This was a clever announcement to make given that the Atlantic traversing former Europeans have already let it be known they are unhappy with the Xbox 360’s $400 tag. Clever how? Well, it is widely accepted that the PS3 is technologically superior to the 360. Its raw tech specs are that little bit more advanced and it will come with that all important Blu-ray drive, while the Xbox 360 still runs on DVDs.

Consequently the world has long been fearful of a monstrous PS3 price tag and now its huge and dedicated fan base knows it will be no more expensive than a 360 this will probably be enough to convince them to keep their collective powder dry; especially after US reports that the 360 lacks a killer launch title. Furthermore, with both companies already making losses on the consoles themselves Sony knows Microsoft can’t afford to discount the 360 for some considerable time. $50 could be cut from its current RRP by June next year, but then the PS3 could very well launch at that price from day one. Crafty.

So once again Sony is trying to have the last word. Unsporting? Maybe, but since Blu-ray looks likely to beat out HD DVD before a disc has been sold, who can blame it for trying to double up?
