PS3 Getting DivX Playback: It's Official

Well, DivX support for the Xbox 360 is still in a slight state of flux at the moment, with everyone saying different things. On the PS3 front, however, things are rather different. DivX made the announcement earlier today that the PS3 is undergoing the final stages of DivX certification in preparation for integrating the codec into the next firmware update.

Game developers will be able to use the codec for trailers and FMVs using the latest developer kit, so expect to see HD trailers on the PSN that don't take 50 hours to download for a five minute video. We could even potentially see film downloads appearing as on Xbox Live, as per earlier speculation.

Given the sudden and apparently magical recognition of DivX encoded files in the PS3's latest firmware (previously they showed as unrecognised) this isn't a total surprise, but speaking as a rather jaded PS3 owner myself I yearn not to need to boot Linux to play videos. Hopefully the needed certification will come soon for the PS3 and at least partly make up for the lack of games.
