PS3 Coming 23 March For £425

It is now more than four months since Sony disappointed European, Russian, Middle Eastern, African and Australasian gamers by announcing the PS3 would be delayed until March 2007. At least it is on time about its lateness.

At one minute past midnight today the troubled giant confirmed a 23 March launch date for all PAL territories though while it spelt out Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Australasia in this it made no reference to Russia.

“Responding to retail and consumer demand,” Sony said it will only ship the more expensive 60GB edition of the PS3 and that it will retail for an almighty £425 (599 Euros, AUD 999.5, NZ 1199.95). The stripped down 20GB PS3 will “follow later in the year dependent on demand”.

So after all this waiting what is the likelihood you’ll be able to get your eager mitts on a PS3 on launch day? Predictability the answer is: Not Good. Just one million units will be spread across all PAL territories “during the initial launch period”, a length of time Sony chose not to define.

30 launch day titles will at least be one hand from day one for those wealthy lucky enough to fight bribe pay over the odds on eBay get a console. Resistance: Fall of Man, MotorStorm, Genji: Days of the Blade, Formula One Championship Edition and Ridge Racer 7 are the highlights though reports Stateside suggest none really set the pulse racing.

Finally, Sony priced up peripherals: SIXAXIS Wireless Controller - EURO 49.99, Blu-ray Disc Remote Control - EURO 24.99, HDMI Cable - EURO 24.99, AV cable - EURO 16.99, Component AV cable - EURO 24.99, S Video cable - EURO 16.99.

My reaction to this, like my reaction to the vast majority of the PS3’s development news… OUCH!
