Today saw Motorola officially drop to third place behind Samsung in the international mobile phone market. Typical of the company's recent lack of innovation is its first attempt to get it back...
Rather than come up with a beautifully designed original idea the company is widely reported to have taken its PEBL handset and upped the functionality to remarket it as the latest ROKR music phone... dear oh dear.
Allegedly dubbed the 'ROKR U9', this tarted up PEBL will be heavily based on that other recent piece of revolutionary design: the RAZR 2. To this end, though we have no official specs, the external screen and controls look very similar and this PEBL ROKR is likely to sport a similar 2MP camera and matching software.
Naturally, this being Motorola, it's completely unoriginal, derivative of two existing lines and doesn't break any boundaries on the tech front but it could be pretty cheap and give models like the O2 Cocoon a run for its money.
So can I see it helping Motorola regain second from Samsung? I think it should watch out for Sony Ericsson coming up on the rails...
Update: There's no 3.5mm headphone jack, it's via mini USB. Marvellous!?
