We’ve been following the progress of Office 12 rather closely at TR and now we’ve got some details on the product which Microsoft hopes to lock into the core of its next gen OS.
First off the bat we have an official name: “Office 2007”. It’s not the most radical choice in the world, but it certainly shows the huge amount of time we’ve had to wait since Office 2003…
More important than semantics, however, are the packaging and pricing details which Big Willy’s boys describe as ‘Better Solutions and More Product Options’. I prefer the term convoluted. This time around no less than 34 (that’s THIRTY-FOUR) different bundles will be available, including seven suites, five server editions, two client access licences and a whole raft of web accessed packages.
Retail and upgrade prices have been released for Professional ($499/$329), Small Business ($449/$279), Standard ($399/$239) and Home ($149) with costs for Enterprise, Professional Plus and Basic suites withheld because the tags are based on volume licensing and OEM offers. As for individual programmes, the biggies like Word, PowerPoint and Excel will retail for $229 and upgrade going for $109. Thus the usual Microsoft Office dilemma begins: to upgrade or not to upgrade, that is the question. Will the switch to XML, PDF support or features Gatesy has been lauding sway you? Maybe, but I figure the key this time around will actually be more dependant on whether you decide to take the plunge on another Microsoft product also arriving in Q4: Vista.
