While it remains immensely popular in the casual computing sector, mention Norton Security and Antivirus products to many a techie and they'll sigh and moan about boating, resource hogging and system slowdown. Well it seems creator Symantec has got the message... big style.

With the release of its 2009 product series this week the core focus warms the cockles of our heart: speed. Far from just refining its previous bulky offerings Symantec has completely rewritten the tools from the ground up for 'zero impact' performance and its claims are remarkable.

Key points include:

  • Sub 60 second installations
  • Quick scans in little over 30 seconds
  • A minimum of 74 per cent less memory usage than any rival product
  • Less than 3 seconds added to a computer's boot time
  • Full system scans between 40 and 89 per cent faster than rivals
  • A real time CPU monitor to show System and Norton usage (a bold step!)
Here's the full breakdown:

Another super idea is the introduction of 'Pulse Updates' which every five to 15 minutes deliver the latest definitions to the product in tiny packages so users are always protected with no need for intervention and no performance hit.

As for the quality of the 2009 line, Symantec claims they will detect 98 per cent of all malware and 95 per cent of all spyware, producing no false positives. Lofty boasts indeed.

Pricing is good too with Internet Security 2009 and Antivirus 2009 retailing for £49.99 and £39.99 respectively and each comes with three user licences. Still not convinced? Norton is offering free trials of both products to any interested parties.

Ok Symantec, it has been a while but you're back in our good books...
