Nokia Ovi Store Launched, New Tablet Leaked

News both official and unofficial concerning the ubiquitous Finns today...

First up Nokia has opened its much anticipated Ovi Store across the globe today. The move follows something of a soft launch late last night which saw it arrive first in Ireland, Australia and Singapore. A headline grabbing 20 000 'titles' will be available immediately to customers - just don't confuse that with actual apps since the vast majority is multimedia content such as promotional material including photos, audio and video.

Interestingly, the flagship Nokia N97 was long touted as first device to ship with Ovi Store access but its commendable Skype integration has seen it shunned by telcos thus far. I hear on the grapevine Skype loving network 3 might be about to change that.

In related news Nokia's next Internet tablet - codenamed 'Rover' - has leaked online (in a typically horrible blurry image). Expected to be formally announced next month (isn't everything?) the tablet will feature a 3.5in 800 x 400 (WVGA) touchscreen, 500-600MHz CPU, five megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, 1GB of internal memory, WiFi, HSPA, GPS and an accelerometer.

At 111 x 59.7 x 18.2mm and weighing 150g, the Rover is far more portable than its N810 predecessor and looks as much smartphone as tablet to these eyes. In fact, I suspect we've just seen what Nokia has planned for its future smartphone lines...

I'm waiting for my upgrade with Three and I really want the Nokia N97. Can you please tell me more about these grapevine rumours? Can you point to any sources?

Also, about the tablet. I&#8217m probably missing something as I don&#8217t know much about the tablets, but what is the difference between that and a smartphone. Can this one not accept a simcard or make GSM phone calls? It looks very much like the N97, but with the more powerful processor it&#8217ll be pretty nippy!

@inzimam - I can't point to sources without getting those involved into trouble, I understand negotiations are going well. Especially since no other network will currently touch the N97 because of its core Skype integration.

We don't know any more about the tablet as yet but it is believed it will not make GSM calls or be available through network subsidies. It does however look like the missing link to the next generation of Nokia handsets...

Thanks Gordon, I appreciate the need to keep some things quiet.

About the N97 though, I was sure I saw that the N97 was due to come out in July on Vodafone. I just googled it and found this link.

Now even if talks are going well at 3, they take forever to release the phones, I doubt it will be before Voda if this is the date.

The new tablet looks very interesting, especially with the rumours of 3G built in. So perhaps it will be possible to use it as a phone with an appropriate VoIP app for it. If so it just may become my next phone as although there's a lot of new stuff out there, very little seems to suit my needs well enough to justify paying the premium for the extremely expensive devices that do.

These guys here:

seem to have a little more information regarding this tablet from Nokia. They mention it will do GSM calls as well as through VOIP, another interesting fact seems to be that T-Mobile is interested in carrying it on their network. AFAIK their previous tablets (the N810 for example) never got much love from most carriers.

@Helmore - I'll certainly be tracking the Rover with interest. Personally I see no reason why Nokia would not want to make this a fully fledged smartphone. For my money the best touchscreen smartphones today are like tablets already.

@inzimam - I appreciate that this may not be the most founded of rumours, but the staff at a 3Store down here in the south of England are absolutely convinced that the N97 WILL be available on 3 just a week after it's launch with 02. Apparently the Nokia rep has been going around the stores with a demo model and has assured them all of this...

I used to work for PC World however (don't hate me, it was a long time ago and I've grown up since) and we used to get reps in all the time saying that we'd be getting their shiny new kit in stock *soon*... Rarely happened...

Hey Guys!! Looks like another great work by Nokia!! What is the price and can you give us more details ! Thanks :D

The N97 is definitely on Vodafone in July: http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/sho...

Hmm. I like the concept of the Internet tablet but, seeing as the N810 didn't even have a SIM slot, how is it that the Rover has HSPA access and is still called an 'Internet Tablet'. The N810 also sported a larger form factor and it lacked a rear-facing megapixel camera. This thing looks morelike a smartphone, no?

Plus, I would imagine that low-cost netbooks would make an expensive Internet Tablet look a little silly these days...

I hope you're right, but to be honest they said the exact same thing when I was waiting for the original n95. It took them 4 months to bring it out after o2 got it.

I might end up waiting till July now, I was going to go for sim free, but it might not be worth it even if i sell my n95 8gb and the new phone i get on upgrade.

About the tablet, I agree that i think these will merge into a smartphone, though the tablet market seems still going with some new Android tablets. Who knows, it does look good though!
