Nokia N8 Home Cinema Video Demo

by

We were lucky to get some time with the Nokia N8 at IFA last week as we were treated to an exclusive look at its video capabilities when Dolby showcased the device's home entertainment capabilities. While we shot the demo below in 1080p HD, the audio doesn't do the sound justice, rendering the impressive Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround to a meagre stereo stream. You'll just have to take our word for it that the 720p HD output from the N8 packs a punch on a large screen.

As the video shows, the playback menus are straghtforward to use and it's simple to connect the Nokia to a home cinema system via the mini HDMI slot at the top of the device. This is one of the key features of this upcoming phone, which will come packaged with a mini to full HDMI cable when it launches in the UK on 1 October.

We expect to get some hands-on time with the N8 at Nokia World 2010, which takes place on 14 and 15 September, where we'll give some more detailed first impressions of the device prior to its launch.

I think that the N8 is looking like one hell of a good device, great hardware and the OS seems very good now (nothing like the N97 at all) and if you don't like the default symbian icons you can always theme it just like all other symbian phones

I know people like knocking Nokia, but the N8 is a cool piece of kit. Also the TV-out feature (HDMI on N8!) is an underexploited feature.

1. Playing video - connect the N8 to your TV and use BBC iPlayer and streaming video websites to play video directly to your TV. No need for Apple TV or Google TV!

2. Gaming - connect the N8 to your TV and use bluetooth accessories like Zeemote (www.zeemote.com), and you have one hell of a game console.

I think the problem for Nokia is that they've lost the confidence of the market. They need a massive marketing campaign to win over mindshare from Apple & Android and show that they've got better/comparible hardware and that the OVI Store can compete with the other markets.

A phone this good from Nokia has been a long time coming, I just hope the OS is up to scratch and I hope the screen is not plastic like most of their smart phones !
