Nokia & EA Join Forces

I don’t know about you, but I rarely play any of the games that come bundled with my mobile phone. In fact it rarely occurs to me even to look at the games that are installed, but Nokia and gaming giant Electronic Arts want to change all that.

Yesterday the two companies announced a partnership that will see big name EA titles rolled out to Nokia’s handsets. Brands like The Sims, Doom, FIFA, Tiger Woods PGA Tour and of course Tetris will be instantly recognisable to gamers the world over. In fact there’s a trial version of EA’s mobile Tetris on my current handset, and that’s the only game I’ve ever bothered playing on it.

Of course it’s unlikely that I will ever choose to play a game on my mobile phone rather than my Nintendo DS or Sony PSP, but I guess the point is that my phone is always in my pocket, while my handheld consoles aren’t.

The games will be downloadable through a number of online stores, and both Nokia and EA will be striving to make the whole process as quick and simple as possible. There’s no word on cost yet, but I shouldn’t think that prices will stray too far from current mobile game downloads.

The big news though, is that from next year EA will be developing a slew of new mobile titles that are custom-designed for the Nokia S60 platform. How these titles turn out remains to be seen, but with Nokia’s recent leaps forward with its N series devices, there’s every chance that this could be a match made in heaven.
