Nokia 2nd Gen N's Arrive

Towards the end of last year Nokia brought out the most powerful range of phones in its history. They were known as the N Series and they gave the Finnish giant a real shot in the arm. Mobile phone technology moves faster than a greased piglet chased by a wheeled bacon slicer however, so just five months later and it is upgrade time!

Top of the tree we have the N93 and like its predecessor, the N92, this clamshell stunner features a twisting QVGA display. Apart from this however, it is improvements all the way with a high end 3.2MP integrated camera with Carl Zeiss optics and 3x optical zoom, impressive 30fps VGA video capture, WLAN, Bluetooth, 3G, EDGE and GSM.

Is runs on a Symbian OS and features software support for ‘Flickr’ allowing photos to be uploaded directly from the handset, there’s a miniSD card expansion slot and 50MB of internal memory though it is a monster at 189g. July is the remarkably early shipping date however and even a Nokia sceptic like myself is rather keen to get my hands on its portly frame.

Occupying an upper middle class spot in the N Series is the N73. This candy bar mobile also manages to pack the same 3.2MP camera, along with 3G, EDGE/GSM and Flickr support. Nokia is labelling the N73 as the “Ultimate Challenge to the Digital Camera” and it is not hard to see why. Furthermore, sporting a 2.4in QVGA display and weighing just 116g it will be considerably more portable than even the most slim line digicam even if video is limited to CIF at 15fps.

Again a Symbian OS is present and microSD card slot, though there’s no WiFi so the Flickr support here is done over Bluetooth. Purple, red, brown and silver variants of the N73 will be available when it touches down with the N93 in July.

Rounding off the bunch is the N72. This is a quad band GSM, two megapixeler with 2.1in 262k colour screen. It again carries the Flickr functionality, though weighs a little more than the N73 at 126g. Video is also CIF at 15fps and there’s 20MB of internal memory, an RS-MMC expansion slot and a Symbian OS. Bluetooth makes it across, but – as you probably suspected by now – WiFi doesn’t. Saying that, it will be the first out the gates appearing in June and is decked out either in manly 80s retro glossy black or girly Paris Hilton pink.

Life was much simpler when I could just proclaim all Nokia handsets as the devil’s work. The development of the N Series on the other hand, leaves me somewhat enamoured by the trickery of the Dark Prince.
