Now here's something to get rather excited about...

Nintendo has proved all the rumours were right today but unveiling a new version of its DS, the 'DSi' and it's a lot more than your average tweak.

On the outside the changes aren't immediately obvious but the dual displays have been slightly enlarged from 3in to 3.25in, there's a handy rear three megapixel camera and a front facing camera on the inside hinge while thickness is down 12 per cent as Nintendo has cut the GBA cartridge slot. OK, that's actually quite a lot.

Storage is also now via SD card - very sensible - with photos automatically saved to it while a web browser has been integrated and owners can download content and games (dubbed 'DSiWare'). Even the audio gets something of a spit and polish (does that metaphor really work?) with pitch and playback adjustment available.

Naturally hitting Japan first, the DSi will be launched on 1 November with a choice of black or white finishes and an ¥18,900 (£101) RRP. Sadly other countries won't see an official release until 2009 so expect the grey market to be even busier than usual this Chrimbo season.

Not to be left out, the Wii is also being updated with Nintendo opening up the console's SD card slot for storage and even running games directly. The 2GB card maximum remains in place however and we won't see this enhancement until sometimes in Q1. Hackers on your marks, get set... oh, you're already off and running.
