Nintendo Ships Record 10 Million Wiis

Nintendo Ships Record 10 Million Wiis

I'll be the first to admit I don't exactly understand the popularity of the Wii (I happily shipped mine off to university with my sister I used it so little) but I'm feeling increasingly alone - especially reading Nintendo's 2008 sales figures. In a record breaking feat, Nintendo shipped an amazing 10.17 million Wii consoles to North America last year, according to figures from NDP Group, an independent analyst which tracks this manner of statistics.

Nintendo's portable DS also managed a record number of sales in December, with 3.04 units shipped. In the same month the Wii broke its own sales record, shifting 2.14 million units.

Amazingly enough, the top selling game for 2008 was Wii Play, which Nintendo for some reason counts despite it being bundled with a remote, which is cheating a bit of you ask me - everyone buying a Wii gets a second remote, surely?. In second place, is Mario Kart Wii (which I admit is brilliant) with Wii Fit taking third position and Super Smash Bros. Brawl in coming in fourth. Significant is that these are all first party titles.

Lest we forget, these figures are only tracking North America. Worldwide sales are even more impressive, with somewhere in the region of 35 million consoles sold. Versus the PS3 (17 million) and Xbox 360 (28 million) that's pretty impressive by anyone's measure.

Recession? What recession!?

WiiSport comes bundled with console, not WiiPlay which comes bundled with WiiRemote. If they did count Wii Sport this would make Wii Sport no.1 by an even Bigger margin as this would be equal to the 10 million consoles sold!

Certainly an impressive feat, but I'm afraid you're wrong to say that Wii Play is bundled with the console - that's Wii Sports. Wii Play does come with a remote (and is priced so you effectively pay around &#1635 for the game) so there is a still a degree of cheating going on there.

IMHO recession, therefore Nintendo ships record 10 million Wiis.

Wii is the cheapest one, right?

Omfg, >80 million of consoles, even considering that 96% of Xboxes are bricked now it's still a hell of a market. No wonder why there's no PC games on torrent anymore. :(

Don't worry Hugo, you're not alone ;)

I owned one for a short while before I decided to sell it (and actually made a small profit due to lack of availability elsewhere). The problem was I only ever used it when the mates were round, and the rest of the time I just used the PS3.

The problem is this is a games console not actually aimed at gamers like myself, but almost everyone else. And the fact that the vast majority of the games produced for the console are utter rubbish and just designed to be made as cheaply as possible and to appeal to kids. Having said that, the average household is much more likely to own a Wii than anything else (as supported by the sales figures).

Wii Sports is bundled with the console!

A small correction. Wii Play is a game that is bundled with a remote when you buy it. I think your thinking of Wii sports which is the game bundled with each Wii.

Holy crap! Nintendo is owning right now. I have a Wii and I admit the games aren't really there, the XBOX 360 looks mighty tempting. But then again, I suppose the market Nintendo is in is bigger than the market that Microsoft and Sony are in.

P.S. "...which Nintendo fir some reason..." Typo?

Wii Sports is the one that's bundled. Wii Play comes separately, but is usually bundled with a Wii Remote.

Thanks all, we'll punish Hugo later.

As a lone voice, I'd like to say that I love Wii Play. Well, ok, I love Tanks. It's the perfect intro to coop multiplayer for kids, and I just can't get to the end of it. Well worth a fiver!

I meant to say controller, honest. It's still cheating - everyone buys a second remote (if not three extras) for the Wii, surely?

Oh the WII my under loved overpriced ioniser, which sits proudly next to the overpriced never loved black grill from Sony.

Congratulations Nintendo let the mediocre shovelware march on.

I always preferred using a computer for games rather than a Playstation or Xbox (or Gamecube) - the mouse/keyboard just seemed better to me than any of the console controllers. When the Wii came out, it was the only thing that bettered (in my opinion) this control method. So I had to have it. These days, though, I only really use it for Guitar Hero, which doesn't even use that!

to be fair, the wii mote is available separately anyway, so people make a choice: controller or controller with game and pay a little more than the controller by itself.

if i had a wii i'd probably mostly use it for virtual console, and gamecube games. it's what i do with my ds now, there's that huge back catalogue of gba games that i simply missed, so i'm playing through those again - too muc h ds trash to trawl through.

How many Wiis were replacements? They don't last long, even if not used much. The optical drive is prone to failure.

@ Robovski

I've never heard or read of problems with Wii hardware. In the 20 years I've been using Nintendo systems I've have never had a problem! Nintendo also has a 24 month warrantee so this would cover the majority of Wii's sold if they did in fact have faulty hardware. I think your thinking of the 360.
