Nintendo Launches Online SDK

While the Nintendo Wii is clearly the most innovative of the current crop of next gen consoles it actually lags behind both the PS3 and Xbox 360 in terms of original downloadable content, something Nintendo is now keen to address...

To this end it has announced 'Wii Software' (which I can't believe wasn't called 'WiiWare') – a game creation service which allows small and large scale developers to create new downloadable titles for sale through the Wii Shop Channel.

"Wii Software provides developers with big ideas, rather than big budgets, an easy and very accessible way to create new games and bring them to the marketplace, as well as offering great additional value for Wii owners who will be able to download fresh new games,” said Laurent Fischer, Nintendo's European Marketing Director.

Further details about Wii Software are currently thin on the ground but the company did say developers will be able to set their own prices for their creations and will detail further information on this and upcoming projects "at a later date".

The first Wii Software is expected to arrive early next year and while the Wii continues to enjoy the lion's share of console sales it is noticeable that – early launch titles aside – games making good use of the Wiimote and Nunchuk have become thin on the ground. So perhaps it isn't just Wii developers and Wii owners who need this service, but Nintendo itself...
