Nikon announces two new compact cameras

Nikon has announced two new compact cameras, one a sleek new ultra-compact, the other an advanced hobby compact aimed at enthusiasts.

The CoolPix P7000 is the first advanced compact Nikon has launched since the P6000 in 2008. Designed to compete with the Canon G11, the new model features a 1/1.7-inch CCD sensor, a larger size than found in most compacts, with a resolution of 10.1 megapixels, significantly lower than the 13.5MP P6000, both features which should produced improved colour depth and reduce image noise. It is equipped with a high quality7.1x zoom Nikkor lens equivalent to 28-200mm, with a maximum aperture of f/2.8-5.6 and two ED glass elements to reduce chromatic aberration.

Other features include full manual exposure control, lens-shift optical image stabilisation, a three-inch 921k LCD monitor and 720p HD video recording with stereo sound. Maximum ISO is 3200, expandable to 6400, and menu options include D-Lighting contrast enhancement and the same Picture Controls tonal customisation as found in Nikon's DSLR range. The camera has a built-in neutral density filter for greater versatility in bright sunlight, and a virtual horizon to help keep landscape shots level.

The CoolPix P7000 has a range of optional accessories including a wide-angle converter and an infrared remote control, and is compatible with Nikon Speedlight flashguns. It will be available from September 23rd with an initial recommended retail price of a rather hefty £489.99.

The CoolPix S80 is an unusual premium ultra-compact with a slim sliding-front design and an internal optically-stabilised 5x zoom lens. Taking a cue from modern smartphones it has a huge 3.5-inch OLED monitor with a resolution of 818k dots and a multi-touch touch-sensitive interface.

Main features include 720p HD video recording with stereo audio, touch-focus shooting for both still and video and 17 scene mode programs. The lens is equivalent to 35-175mm.
