New iPhone Models Leaked & OLED Displays Rumoured

Following the unveiling of iPhone OS 3.0 we get the first in what is sure to be a torrent of 'leaks' and 'revelations'...

Both bits of chitter chatter doing the rounds today are rather exciting so let's cut straight to it. Firstly, BGR has been handed some rather interesting code extracts from the iPhone OS 3.0 restore ramdisk. Revealed deep within are the references to:

iPhone2,1 - 0×1294

iProd0,1 - 0×1295

iPod2,2 - 0×1296

iPhone3,1 - 0×1297

iFPGA - 0×1298

iPod3,1 - 0×1299

None of these align with the existing devices which are clearly listed as

iPhone First Gen - 0×1290

iPod touch 1G - 0×1291

iPhone 3G - 0×1292

iPod touch 2G - 0×1293

Could multiple new iPhone models be on the way out with both a 3G replacement and the long rumoured 'iPhone nano'? In the current environment broadening a portfolio beyond more than one premium device is probably a rather good idea, so it could well be.

Next, Aussie title 'Smarthouse' claims sources within LG Korea have confirmed to them that it will be providing Apple with OLED screens for both new MacBooks and the next generation iPhone(s). Famed for their vibrancy, slimness and low power draw, Apple allegedly paid the company over $500m upfront for a gargantuan order of the displays with additional special coatings to eliminate 'finger marking'.

Now both these stories could be on the money or utter rubbish, but with OS 3.0 seen by many to have enough upgrades to negate a new iPhone purchase such additions could well be the spur Apple needs to get recession wary wallets once more out of pockets.

Fingers crossed, I say...

In related news iPhone OS 3.0 removes the limit on 10MB OTA podcast downloads but keeps it in place for Apps over 10MB. We'll have to wait and see how this one plays out come release...

Hope I can quote Engadget here on the Smarthouse OLED rumour:

"This article in question was written by SmartHouse veteran David Richards, who in the past has brought us such winners as PlayStation 4 launching in 2008, a Xbox 360 equipped with HD DVD, and our favorite, Apple producing its own soap opera series exclusively for the iPod"

Hopefully, he's more accurate with this prediction.

iPhone2,1 was discovered in January in the iPhone OS 2 software and revealed to have been spotted on ad delivery networks as early as October 2008. (PinchMedia)

They go on to add:

- 1st spotting of the "iPhone 2,1" device occured in early October 2008

- Usage picked up in mid-December 2008

- A few dozen distinct "iPhone 2,1" devices have been detected

- Almost exclusively located in south San Francisco Bay Area

- Both AT&T and Wi-Fi connections

2,1 is most probably an internal prototype iPhone which has now evolved into 3,1, which I'd take a stab in the dark at being more in line hardware-wise with the next iteration of the iPhone.

Speculation suggests iFPGA may be a device that utilizes a field-programmable gate array.

I'd be very surprised if an iphone Nano comes out. They couldn't just shrink everything to fit on the smaller screen, because of the loss of resolution, and it would make the keyboard harder to use. The alternative, of using a lower resolution screen, would mean that all the apps would have to be reprogrammed to take account of it.

Tellingly no third party case makers has shown off their new designs. When the 3g version came out, the new cases kinda gave the game away. As this hasn't happened yet, I'm still thinking there won't be a 'nano' version of the iphone released this Summer.

I'm all for OLED, for iPhone 'Nano'. And I'm certain we will see a smaller-sized iPhone in the not too distant future, it wouldn't surprise me in the least. Though I think we'll see an "iPhone Mini" first, by definition I'd save 'Nano' for a future, really slim, iPhone. Just like they did with iPod. I just don't feel that a slightly smaller iPhone would suit the Nano tag quite well until it shed some fat. I can only see iPhone Nano being first out the bag if Apple go straight to the "small and very slim" design, skipping the in-between Mini altogether. Could this be where OLED comes in? I bloody well hope so, just imagine what it'll do for the MacBook Air! :)

With OS3 mostly catching up with the competition software wise if they can release new hardware with a decent camera and a radio I might finally consider an iPhone.
