The last thing we need right now is another flash memory standard, but what about an enforced evolution? Well, erm… ok.
SD 2.0, then next change in the incredibly popular SD Card format, will take place towards the end of Q3 this year. The selling point in this new specification is its FAT32 formatting which gives it a capacious 32GB maximum capacity, the downside is sizes of 4GB and above will not be compatible with the existing SD 1.0/1.1standard.
To clarify any confusion all SD Cards of 4GB or more will be named SD High Capacity (SDHC) though I still expect to see many heavily scratched heads upon their arrival. The ‘but’ in all of this however is a big one. The new format maxes out at just 6MBps and though we can surely expect rates to increase over time I’m not sure what the point is in swapping around such large amounts of data at such low speeds.
Still, prices for high capacity SDHC Cards (to give it its proper branding) should come toppling down and a 4GB version is expected to retail for under £150. PQI and Panasonic have been the first to show off their interpretations with the former revealing that we can look ahead to 2.0 miniSD and microSD cards in the near future.
Evolution and Convolution, why do they always have to be such firm friends?
It seems Panasonic and PQI can't make up their minds about the data rates of the new SDHC standard. PQI says it will be "Class 2 (2MB/sec), Class 4 (4MB/sec) and Class 6 (6MB/sec)" compliant, Panasonic states a "data transfer speed of up to 5MB/s. It is compliant with the Class 2 SD Speed Class specification". Fingers crossed it's the former, 6MBps is slow enough as it is.
