Canon yesterday announced its Autumn collection of new photographic products, including half a dozen new digital compact cameras. The highlight was the new G11 semi-pro compact, but there were also two new IXUS models, a welcome return of the advanced compact S series, and two new SX series zoom cameras.
PowerShot SX120 IS
The PowerShot SX120 IS is a fairly straightforward upgrade of the popular SX110 IS, launched last Autumn and still available for around £190.
The update increases the resolution of the sensor from 9.0 to 10.0 megapixels, and upgrades the processor to the new faster and more energy-efficient DIGIC 4, while retaining the same easy-to-handle plastic body, 10x zoom (36-360mm equiv.) f/2.8-4.3 lens and 3.0-inch 230k monitor.
It also retains the VGA 30fps video mode with mono audio, the powerful pop-up flash with high-speed shutter sync, and the useful range of manual exposure controls. Thanks to the faster processor however Canon claims an improved continuous shooting speed of 1.3fps.
Power is supplied by two AA batteries, and the camera measures 110.6 x 70.4 x 44.7 mm and weighs 245g, also the same as the SX110 IS. The Sx120 IS will be available from the end of August, with a launch price of £229.
