Cable company NTL has announced that anyone signing up to its 600KB/sec or 1MB/sec broadband service will get a free XBox. The deal includes two months free subscription for the XBox Live service and an XBox Live communicator headset. The driving game Midtown Madness 3 is also thrown in. The offer is only available to new subscribers and installation costs £50. NTL claims that the package is worth £200.
Microsoft's Home and Entertainment divison, which looks after the XBox, has just an recorded an operating loss of $339 million in the last quater, so if the thought of adding to Microsoft's loss appeals then this offer should be very attractive. That said, the Xbox user base has now reached 15 million consoles worldwide, a rise of 27 per cent on last year, so Microsoft probably isn't complaining.
Moving back to the NTL deal, the 600KB/sec service coss £24.99 a month, but as a sweetener, the cableco has promised that the service will up uprated to 750KB/sec for free as some point in the near future. At the same time subscribers to the £34.99 a month 1MB/sec service will enjoy a free upgrade to 1.5MB/sec.
