Motorola "Media Monster" Headlines New ROKR Range

While the RAZR 2 grabbed all the headlines, it wasn't the only handset Motorola unveiled yesterday...

Along with a new slinky smartphone (story coming soon) is a pair of new ROKRs: the Z6 and Z8. It is the latter which interests us most as it is being marketed as "the best multimedia platform on a phone today" and it makes a good stab of living up to this tag.

For a start the Z8 can playback video at up to 30fps (double that of most devices – including iPods), it follows this up with HSDPA 3.6Mbps connectivity for high quality video streaming and then goes for the kill with a range of pre-installed third party applications including Sky's Anytime with its online library of news, entertainment and sports and one click access to Flickr, MySpace and YouTube.

Against this however is the Z8's QVGA screen which – while nice – doesn't appear particularly large, a fact perhaps given credence by Motorola's decision to exclude its size from the launch details. On top of this no mention was made of what formats the handset will support and what level of compression will be required. Finally, the handset's onboard memory is just 80MB so you're going to need a large microSD card to get the most out of it.

Still, Motorola is highly confident of the Z8 and it will be shipping a full length copy of the Bourne Identity on microSD with every handset when it launches across Europe and Asia in June. Watch this space...

Alongside the Z8 is its smaller brother, the Z6 – a more audio centric device. It dumps the ill fated iTunes software of the original replacing it with Microsoft Windows Media and has launched a publicity tie-in with Napster. As for the cold, hard stats you'll get a 2in QVGA display, Bluetooth with A2DP (naturally), a 2MP camera, 64MB of onboard memory and a microSD expansion slot.

June is the arrival date for the Z6 and it is likely to come free on most 12/18 month contracts. Even more Motorola news on the way...
