Well, who couldn't see this coming...?

Ed Zander, CEO of Motorola, has announced he will step down from his lofty position on 1 January. He will be temporarily replaced by current president and COO Greg Brown until a formal successor is agreed at the company's annual shareholder's meeting in May.

Samuel C. Scott III, head of Motorola's board of directors, said, "I want to take this opportunity to thank Ed for his vision, expertise and tireless commitment to Motorola. We greatly appreciate his many contributions and wish him all the best in the years ahead. Today's decision is the culmination of a thoughtful and disciplined process of succession planning."

Well, no. No, no, no.

Zander started his leadership of Motorola on 5 January 2004 - the year the company launched its first RAZR (which had been in development since July '03). During his tenure Motorola went on to become a one card trick producing *deep breath* the: RAZR V3, RAZR V3i, RAZR V3r/V3t, RAZR V3im, RAZR MS500, RAZR V3c, RAZR V3m, RAZR V3x, RAZR V3xx, RAZR maxx and RAZR 2. Anyone spotting a theme?

Ultimately, it was a policy which capitalised on a single brilliant design (at the time), milked every last drop from it and then milked it some more. Zander also presided over some truly horrible Motorola products including its shambolic iTunes ROKR handset and the laughable Oakley RAZRWIRE.

Meanwhile other companies - most notably Samsung - exploited these baffling business decisions, stole market share and watched Motorola's global standing slump.

Thankfully a change has finally come at the highest level and given that no Motorola handset has won a TrustedReviews Recommended Award in four years it arguably should have come a lot sooner.

So over to you Mr Brown, no pressure...

Update: The company's Chief Technology Officer (yep, apparently it had one - who figured?), the wonderfully named Padmasree Warrior has also split. The only way is up...?
