With 23 March inching ever closer Microsoft has secretly kicked off its war with Sony’s PlayStation 3.
Company execs aren’t saying a word but online retailers are doing the talking for them as they suddenly reduced Xbox 360 asking prices yesterday by as much as £50.
Play.com was the chief protagonist in this as it has advertised an Xbox 360 Core system for just £149.99 including free delivery, while Amazon UK and FonePlanet cut a tenner from the same system suddenly listing them at £189.99. The curiously named GametartDirect also joined in the fun cutting its asking price for a core to an equally curious £190.47 – odd bunch.
Looking at these deals Sony’s £424.99 RRP for the PS3 (from which retailers won’t be budging an inch) looks even more hideously overpriced than it already was. Naturally Sony will drag out its age old argument that you’re getting a Blu-ray player and a games console for around half the price of a standard Blu-ray player but we’ll hit back with the age old response: what if you only want to play games?
And with Xbox 360 Cores now coming in for less than a Nintendo Wii perhaps there is more than one war being waged here...
Update: Play.com has pulled its £149.99 Core offer (perhaps after a slap from Overlord Gates for jumping the Microsoft gun). Below is the cache of the previous listing though... and – like the Governor of California – expect it to be back.
