Microsoft My Phone Beta Opens To All

My Phone was perhaps a more exciting announcement than the rather rushed looking Windows Phone at this year's Mobile World Congress and now we can all try it out...

Well, I say 'all' but Microsoft's Mobile Me beater requires users to have a Windows Mobile 6.x smartphone at present even if it should become available to all platforms in time. So, what do we get?

Like MM, My Phone is a Cloud based wireless synchronisation service which allows for contacts, calendar entries, text messages, photos and even some video to be automatically stored online in a password protected account. The theory is should anything happen to your phone be it stolen/lost/drowned after you dived/jumped fully clothed into the fountain/swimming pool like a muppet that the data will be safe. One caveat: My Phone is not currently compatible with handsets actively connected to Exchange - amusing yes.

You can trial My Phone now simply by going to http://myphone.microsoft.com/install in your Windows Mobile phone's browser and you'll be on your way. Cloud storage is currently limited to 200MB per user though larger options will be available by launch towards the end of the year.

The start of better things for Microsoft in the smartphone world? Let's hope so...

I've been using this for a few months now. Nice to know my data's backed up without having to use multiple programs like I did previously.

I especially like the ability to archive items to the net.

I'm yet to either replace or reset my phone, which will be the real test of how well it works.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that it's not compatible with phones connected to Exchange. I've been running both just fine.

Just used it myself and it seems pretty good :) Top marks.

I've been running exchange email and MyPhone since the first MyPhone release... It works fine. Yes, you can't sync email, tasks, calendar or contacts with both, but why would you ever want to do that?

I regularly reflash the ROM (I like trying out WM6.5, which works great with MyPhone BTW) so it's incredibly useful to not have to backup things like text messages (although syncing 6,000 of the things does take some time :S)

i use it to sync texts and photos but apart from that it'd a bit limited. exchange is much better for syncing PIM although that's definitely not the solution for everyone. when they finally get around to integrating with Windows Live it may be more useful. To be fair at least it's a free service.

What'd be nice is if in 6.5/7 there was just a single 'Sync' function. Currently I'm syncing MyPhone (Photos/Videos/Texts), ActiceSync (Email/Contacts/Calendar/Tasks) and Windows Live (Email/Contacts).

{If anybody know's an app for 6.1 that'll do this, please post it : D}
