Microsoft Handheld Will Come

Microsoft has remained cagey about its intent to create a portable gaming platform but Corporate VP Shane Kim looks to have broken that vow of silence in an interview with Kikizo. According to Kim, "the question will be: how do we enter into that market?"

Kim expanded with a number of points Microsoft is considering: "do we do our own device, do we create our own phone - that's a question for the company itself - do we continue to go down the Windows Mobile path which is that path that we're on today, etcetera, etcetera." From what Kim is saying, it looks like Microsoft isn't likely to decide all too soon. As he points out: "For us, it's a matter of focusing on 'when', because if we chased after a mobile or handheld opportunity, we would not have the resources and ability to do things like... Project Natal."

The implication seems to be that Microsoft may be keener on bringing Live to mobile devices than creating a dedicated hardware platform. Says Kim, Microsoft has "chosen to focus on the living room experience from a hardware standpoint, if you will, but we're building a service in Live that will... will extend to other platforms. No question about it." Other platforms presumably meaning Windows and perhaps Widows Mobile - it's not like we'll see Live on the DS after all.

A definite 'watch this space' at the very least, however, methinks.

Kikizo.
