Medion PC Packs HD DVD, Blu-ray, Insane Low Price

We do like to rave about our high definition formats here at TrustedReviews, but truth be told we probably need to concede that most people aren't willing to make the outlay on the generally expensive equipment. But what if I told you that Medion, makers of the Medion 6486 with which we were rather pleased, were offering a PC sporting both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats for under £700? I think you'll agree the prospect is tempting so all the better that the offer is genuine, rather than a figment of my imagination.

The drive in question is an LG dual-format model which will read both HD formats but not write, which is a shame if you somehow need 25GB of data on one disc. Processing power is provided by a 2.67GHz Intel E6750, and graphics grunt comes from an nVidia 8600 GS so while you may not be playing many games, you will get the benefit of the video decoders (as omitted from the higher end 8800-series cards) and HDMI output for enjoying HD discs in all their 1080p glory. Last but not least, the to be expected 2GB of RAM is present and correct.

So the vital statistics all check out, but Medion hasn't stopped there; connectivity includes the usual array of 7.1-channel sound outputs, including coaxial and optical S/PDIF ports, a triple-hybrid TV tuner is fitted, allowing analogue, DVB-T (digital terrestrial) and DVB-S (satellite) tuning from the PC, hard drive capacity weighs in at 500GB for recording all that TV and Draft-N wireless also makes the bill. All well and good, but as I already hinted, the real killer with the Medion 8828 is that it packs all the above in for £629; a very compelling price however you look at it. You can get your hands on the system as of the 2nd of December in Aldi stores.
