While elsewhere at the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco others were raining on Nintendo’s parade, its President Satoru Iwata took some time to outline what is coming for the 3DS including Mario, Game Gear and TurboGrafx-16.

Iwata told delegates at the conference that, as expected, the Italian plumber would be coming to the new handheld console. The as-yet untitled game will feature “traditional Mario gameplay” and “will fulfil the dream of Nintendo video game designer (and Mario creator) Shigeru Miyamoto to bring true depth and distance into the game's mechanics.” There is no confirmed release date for Mario 3DS yet but it was confirmed that the team behind Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will lead development of the duties.

In more exciting and interesting news, Iwata revealed that as part of a new Virtual Console service, gamers can not only look forward to ports of Game Boy and Game Boy Colour titles but also games from Sega’s Game Gear and NEC’s cult TurboGrafx-16. So as well as looking forward to games like Splinter Cell 3D, users will be able to challenge themselves on cult shooters GunHed, Gradius and Strider. The TurboGrafx-16 was launched in the late 1980s and gained a cult following in the years after launch.

Iwata also revealed that Nintendo is planning a series of "3D Classics", where veteran titles will be given a 3D makeover. Current DSiWare titles will also be available on the platform, as will an internet browser and a “shortform” video download feature, allowing owners to view clips of music videos and movie trailers. The 3DS will launch here on the same day as the iPad 2, 25 March, and if sales in Japan are anything to go by, units could be hard to get your hands on.
