The Apple site went down briefly today and we all know what that means…
The new products this time around were upgraded MacBook Pros and – predictably – they made the long awaited jump to Intel’s snazzy Santa Rosa platform and brought all the goodness they provide including a choice of Intel Core 2 Duo processors up to 2.4GHz, Draft 2.0 wireless N and a faster 800MHz frontside bus (FSB). Graphics get a boost too via nVidia’s GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB RAM.
Apple has also finally gone for LED backlighting but curiously chosen to offer it only on the 15.4in model which comes with a 1440 x 900 pixel native resolution. Consequently those feeling the love for a 17 incher (complete with 1920 x 1200 – 1080p friendly res) have to do without.
It is the smaller of the two which gets the bigger hardware overhaul too with a 160GB HDD, 2GB DDR2 RAM, faster 8x slot loading SuperDrive and Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR now standard. The 17 incher – Santa Rosa and faster CPU apart – sees just a 250GB HDD.
Prices start at $1,999 for the 15 incher and $2,799 for its big bro. The UK site hasn’t been updated yet but give it a few hours as we all know Apple's long running US bias...
