Logitech Makes First Mac Compatible Webcam

You'll hear a lot of crazy facts in the technology world, but if I were to tell you that after shipping 50m webcams that this is the first one Logitech has made for the Mac, you'd be forgiven for thinking me nuttier than a bowl of pistachios.

That is the case however and so committed is Logitech to this move the 'QuickCam Vision Pro webcam for Mac' (yes, that really is the title) is completely incompatible with a certain OS made in Redmond. So what does it bring to the table?

For a start a USB 2.0 connection (no FireWire? Naughty) along with a two megapixel sensor and autofocusing Carl Zeiss lens. Not bad. Video also streams in VGA at up to 30fps while 960 x 720 pixel (technically 720p HD) footage can be recorded directly to disk meaning this is no slouch. The design also means the cam can be clipped to the top of a monitor or notebook screen while there's full integration with both iChat and Skype.

"With this new webcam for Mac computers, we've integrated our most advanced video technologies to truly enrich your video-calling experience," said Gina Clark, GM and VP of Logitech's Internet Communications Business. "Whether you've used a standalone or an embedded webcam in the past, you'll be amazed at the difference in quality our new webcam makes."

To be fair, despite the improved performance of integrated units, dedicated webcams do still have the edge so if you're a Skype or YouTube-aholic or simply have an unsettling exhibitionist streak the £69.99 RRP shouldn't put you off when the QVPWFM (nice acronym) launches next month.

But haven't Apple have been favouring USB over 1394 for a while now?
