Latest Epson RX Looking Good

In the heavily overcrowded printer market the venerable Epson RX series has remained one of the few lines where we genuinely look forward to each upgrade. Our review in the past have been positive and the latest model looks set to continue this trend.

Badged as the RX640 (the previous model was the RX520) it boasts a teeny 1.5pl minimum droplet size for super fine photo printing, a 3200dpi scanner and high definition 2.5in LCD screen. In fact, the latter feature deserves a special mention since its 256ppi (pixels per inch) resolution is much higher than we have seen in other models. It may also mean that the supposed on screen photo editing PC-less capababilities printers have long boasted could finally gain some credibility.

Determined not to be outdone, the 3200 x 6400dpi MatrixCCD scanner built into the RX640 certainly suggests this all-in-one is here to do far more than just make up the numbers when it hits the shelves later this month. Printing directly onto CDs and DVDs is also supported along with PictBridge compatibility for direct printing from digital cameras and a flash reader to do the same from memory cards. The Bluetooth module is an optional extra though.

If I do have one grudge about the specs on the new RX it is the continued lack of an integrated fax. It may be technology that is headed the way of the dinosaur but called your printer an all-in-one when it doesn´t have a fax is pushing it a little. Obviously, depending on your needs, this either irrelevant or a deal breaker. If you´re still interested after this revelation, then the RRP of £229 including VATis unlikely to put you off...
