The haunting opening refrain from Ennio Morricone’s score to Sergio Leone’s 1964 classic western A Fistful of Dollars is one of the most iconic moments in film history. The possibility of hearing it as a ring tone on a mobile saddens us.
Yes, it has been announced by LG that the legendary Italian composer has signed up to provide 15 unique ringtones as well as 10 of his most famous tunes from his film scores for its smartphone range. The LG Optimus 2X, the South Korean’s flagship dual core phone which has been confirmed as coming to the UK next month, will be the first handset to benefit. It just doesn’t sit right with us that we will hear this iconic musical score emanating from someone’s pocket or handbag – unless of course said pocket or handbag belonged to Clint Eastwood (Clint is cool enough to get away with carrying a handbag).
"Reproducing his work with such amazing clarity on the Optimus 2X, gives smartphones a whole new level of respect as the primary device for on-the-go music." explained LG. There will also be a 'selection' of apps with Morricone-related content – including images and video clips available free from the LG store.
"Signore Morricone is one of the best-loved soundtrack composers of all time," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. Indeed he is Doc, and as such should be left to what he does best. While the sound capabilities of smartphones are improving constantly we just don’t think it could ever do justice to the achingly beautiful scores from the Italian maestro.
As well as collaborating with his former classmate Sergio Leone, Morricone has worked onsuch great films as The Untouchables, Cinema Paradiso and The Mission and for those of you yet to experience his genius, please enjoy the clip below.
