LG Puts 5MP iPhone Rival Into Clamshell Design

With touchscreen handsets emerging from all angles in the iPhone's familiar candybar format, it seemed everyone had forgotten about the humble clamshell...

Righting this wrong is LG (perhaps Casio - see below) with the 'OZ' - an ultra high end twisting clamshell with a large 2.8in touchscreen featuring a monstrous 800 x 480 native resolution (something which makes it an obvious twin for the Touch Web).

It takes a step up from its stable mate however with a 5.1MP integrated camera with 28mm lens, colour correction, nine-point autofocus and anti-shake technology that potentially puts it on a par with Sony Ericsson's Cybershot line. Mobile TV makes an appearance too with DMB onboard while there's 4GB of storage, a microSD expansion slot, HSDPA connectivity and VGA video recording at up to 30fps. Yep, I told you it was high end...

At just 103 x 50 x 18.9mm the OZ is no ballerina, though its 122.5g weight is lighter than an iPhone which - given the clamshell format and hard keys - is commendable.

Defying its nametag, the OZ will be hitting Korea first, turning up in Q2 for 500,000 Won (£256). International variants (DVB-H would be required for mobile TV in Europe) are expected to spin off as/when the OZ proves a success in its homeland, something which seems a formality...

Update:
Looks like LG can re-label with the best of em, since the OZ is virtually identical to the Casio W53CA. Personally, we don't care who makes it though, just get it over here!
