LG Optimus 2X Lands With Dual Core Power

We thought the Nexus S would be first to the market with dual core processing power. While the Google phone disappointed in that respect, we haven't had long to wait as LG has now announced the Optimus 2X, which as you might guess from the name boasts a dual core Tegra 2 processor.

Last month we saw some pictures of this phone, then named the LG Star, and rumours of dual core power. LG today confirmed those rumours by unveiling the Optimus 2X, which will be available in its home territory of South Korea next month before then rolling out to countries in Europe and Asia. Pricing hasn’t been announced but we do know the Optimus 2X will run Android 2.2 (Froyo) out of the box, but the LG press release added it “will be upgradeable to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). The upgrade schedule will be announced in local markets in due course.”

Regarding the specs, the Optimus 2X will have the dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor running at 1Ghz which LG claims will mean “faster, smoother web browsing and applications and lets users multitask with virtually no screen lag.” The Optimus 2X has a 4in WVGA screen, 8GB of memory (expandable to 32GB via a microSD slot), a micro USB port and a 1,500 mAh battery. The high-end smartphone will also boast an 8 megapixel rear camera and 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera allowing for face-to-face calling.

LG will let users see the power of the dual core processor with 1080p HD video playback via a HDMI-out slot and 1080p recording with the 8 megapixel camera. The 2X can connect wirelessly to any DLNA-compatible digital device such as HD TVs to taking full advantage of the phone's HDMI mirroring, accelerometer and gyro sensor.

No doubt we will be seeing many more dual core phones in the coming months but we're already looking forward to getting our hands on the Optimus 2X to see just what that power can do.
