LG Officially Unveils New Chocolate With 4in 21:9 LCD

I'm now a little worried...

LG has formally announced the truly nutty BL40 which we saw leaked on a promotional video earlier this month. Interestingly, the only detail we have is that the remarkable 4in 21:9 aspect ratio 800 x 345 pixel screen is indeed in line with the earlier scoop. LG is also simply calling the handset the 'LG Chocolate' which means a complete reboot of the series - fine choice.

So with this in mind let's recap what LG can't say yet: the BL40 will also have HSDPA, aGPS (meaning WiFi as well), a 5MP camera with flash (unknown kind) and capactive touchscreen with multi-touch gesture control. What remains a mystery are the overall size and weight, battery life as a result of powering that monster display and OS. Which brings me to the worried part...

If you check back to the leaked video (above) what we saw was a superb, next generation, finger friendly UI that had us positively spellbound. What this official press shots show on the other hand are the same layout and criminally ugly icons as the flawed OS seen on the GC 900 Viewty Smart and 12 megapixel GC 990 Louvre. Two handsets which also aren't smartphones.

Now I've fingers tightly crossed that we are completely wrong about this but with LG quoting a Q3 launch timeframe for a whopping 54 countries that doesn't leave much room for last minute alterations...

the video looks fab! Bring it on LG!

Nothing wrong even if it isn't a 'smartphone'. Most featurephones these days had the same functionalities, if not more, than smartphones just a couple of years ago. This looks pretty cool, but I am concerned about the longish form factor. It isn't something I would want to carry in my shirt pocket.

Dammit Gordon, I'd had enough bad news for one day...

Why can't manufacturers be bothered with the effort any more?

July 31, 2009, 3:35 am

@xbrumster - you're missing the point regarding the video, think you need to read the article again.

@drdark - sorry, we'll try and find some happy news for you tomorrow ;)

If this had a certain "fruit" symbol on it there would have been a magnitude more of comments gushing about all the wonderful features and ignoring the flaws. ;-)

July 31, 2009, 1:36 pm

@Gordon, oh yes I read it, three times. It doesnt bother me too much. In this recession buggering climate, if LG fails to deliver, it's their loss which I am sure they cannot affort to do so, or too long to do so...

July 31, 2009, 3:03 pm

@Moggy, I am not sure the firm with certain 'fruit' symbol would deliver anything with 21:9 LCD as it would potentially alienate quite a number of apps/games in their apps store.

I look the look of this. It's alot more interesting than the 'me-too' box's phone companies have been making of late to match the iphone. Still, the proof's in the pudding so I hope LG get it out fairly soon (but not half buggered waiting for a software patch).

More screen space is always welcome but Im very unlikely to want to carry around something like this with such an odd unpocketable size/shape. Shame really... We have several Renoirs in the family (chosen for the cameraabilities) and I must say that the WinMO 6.1 experience (however disguised_ is pretty lame compared to the tour de force gui of the iPhone. Nevertheless it is passable & can be overlooked for the excellent hardware features of our Renoirs incomparison to the iPhone. I mean when the heck is Apple gonna put more Bluetooth profiles on it for godsakes? But I digress...

July 31, 2009, 7:28 pm

People might say the form factor is stupid but I really don't see much of a difference between the elongated shape of this and any old cordless phone, other than it being much more sleek and stylish. Interesting how mobile manufacturers spent all their time makin things as small as possible, and now they feel compelled to make them accommodate bigger and better screens. They've came full circle.

If the fingers in the video postet by betelgeus are up to scale, than that thing is a monstrosity. It's gonna look ridiculous to hold that thing to your ear.

Even a smartphone should be a PHONE. Next thing is Asus equipping the EEE PC with a microphone and calling it a smartphone or what?
