LG Launches Stylish Music Phone On 3

It was while standing in the VIP queue (I ask: should there be such as thing?) for the LG sponsored DMC DJ Championships at the home of school disco retro otherwise known as the Hammersmith Palais that I realised what a good handset the U400 looks. Now 3 has gone and nabbed it prior to launch.

It was a large, shaven headed, heavy set bouncer that showed me the light. Distributed with samples before the scratchtastic event the bulldogish security team were entertaining rather than intimidating the hordes with the company’s latest music orientated mobile. Available solely in black, the slim line (99.8mm x 48mm x 20.4mm), lightweight (114g) slider packs a large 2in 262k colour screen, 3G capability, a two megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth and an impressive 232 minutes of talk time or 335 hours on standby.

Nice as this spec list is however, undoubtedly it will be the iPodian scroll wheel that will attract many to this handset. Not nearly as blatant as the Pantech PG-3600V, the U400 still uses Apple invented navigation method to scroll through menus, artists and track lists while cleverly doubling up as a five way joypad. A mass of preloaded DMC content will also be held on the handset of which the most innovative (if cheesy) is a piece of software that lets owners use the scroll wheel to ruin scratch over their favourite songs. I have to admit, it entertained me for the whole five minutes I waited in the queue…

Ultimately, when combined with the company’s uber-popular Chocolate handsets, the U400 shows just how hard LG is pushing to sit at the big table with sector heavyweights like Sony Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung. That said, why release it exclusively on 3? It’s like giving a basset hound sirloin.
