LG Launches Semi-Smart Touchscreen Phones

While the smartphone/dumbphone differentiator still exists the line is becoming increasingly blurred, as this semi-smart duo illustrate...

The LG 'GW520' and 'GT505' combine simplicity with basic smartphone functionality to create rather interesting hybrids for the mid/entry level market.

Each features a large touchscreen - 2.8in on GW520, 3in on GT505 - along with HSDPA, WiFi, push email and IM support. You'll find a three megapixel camera on the GW520 and a boosted five megapixel one in the GT505, while the former adds in a sliding physical Qwerty keyboard and the latter boasts turn-by-turn GPS. Social networking fanatics will also be rather pleased to learn the duo can push updates from their favourite social networking sites.

"Mobile communications have been about more than just voice based calls for a long time, but consumers are now demanding more than just SMS and IM services," said LG Mobile UK marketing head Jeremy Newing. "They want the kind of messaging and social networking features previously the preserve of high end handsets on a wide range of models, and that is what LG is offering. We recognise the demand for mobile devices that enable quick and easy interaction with social network sites as a growing market."

Despite Newing's enthusiastic words you won't be doing a great deal of pleasurable web surfing on either handset's native browsers since they're limited to WAP 2.0 - though that should be quickly solved with Opera Mini.

The LG GW520 will appear on most networks this month, with the GT505 also dropping in June exclusively on Orange. Expect both models to come free/virtually free on even the lowest of monthly contracts…
