Interest in this one has been huge so it’s good to know LG has finally obliged us with an official announcement.
As thought, the device will indeed be called the ‘KE850’ but will more likely be known as the ‘Prada Phone’. It is an EDGE limited handset (so no 3G) but at 98.8 x 54 x 12mm is just as portable as Apple’s similar (and much drooled over) iPhone.
A 3in touch screen will be at the KE850’s core with a 320 x 480 native resolution and a 2MP camera makes it into the final design. Video and audio playback are featured but LG has thus far kept codec support under wraps which is frustrating as this could also make a fantastic PMP.
Bluetooth 2.0 is there but WiFi – perhaps surprisingly – is not. A microSD slot will be there for memory expansion but quite how much the Chocolate manufacturer is putting into the handset itself is currently unclear.
What is surprising however is the shock February release date. For such a futuristic looking device a market arrival somewhere around Q3 wouldn’t have been unreasonable.
That said, early adopters will pay a substantial price premium as the KE850 is going to set users back a whopping 600 euros - though we don’t yet know how this will be subsidised by network tariffs or even which networks have bitten.
If the price can come down, I think LG could be onto a real winner.
