With virtually endless variants of USB drive flooding the planet the question has to be asked: Do we really need two more? Well, yeah - go on then.
My forgiving mood is created thanks to some genuine innovation on the part of LG which has today introduced two models: the ‘Biometric USB' and the ‘Vaccine USB'.
No prizes for guessing the former (top left) which is a USB drive with integrated biometric fingerprint reader for the security conscious. When used for the first time, the user is asked to scan their fingerprint and an additional password option is also available. Once activated any data stored is inaccessible to anyone else. Rather cleverly however up to 10 fingerprints can be registered so fellow business colleagues or family members can become part of a tight knit group.
As for the Vaccine USB, this is something completely new on me: a USB drive with onboard antivirus featuring real time system monitoring and hardware scans. The moment the drive is inserted into a laptop or desktop it kicks into action automatically checking incoming traffic for viruses and malware and performing full hardware scans when either scheduled or requested.
A free two year virus definition licence comes with the Vaccine USB and it could prove a boon not just to the security conscious but also for those whose computers have already been infected and their PC antivirus solutions compromised.
The Biometric USB goes on sale with capacities between 512MB and 4GB while the Vaccine USB is available in sizes from 512MB to a whopping 8GB. Pricing and release dates weren't disclosed but expect them sooner rather than later.
Whatever next? A digital camera USB drive?
You watch… it'll happen.
