LG isn't a company you might usually associate with London Fashion Week, but you'd be mistaken because it is coinciding the launch of its ‘fashion' TV range with the event. A move that doesn't seem as strange as it may sound once you see the sets which are certainly aesthetically striking.
Starting with the flagship LG6000 LCD series we see 32in, 37in, 42in and 47in panel options with specs varying slightly by size - the differentiator being that the two largest sized models offer 100Hz modes. LG claims a 15,000:1 contrast ratio, using a dynamic backlight, support for 24p playback and a quartet of HDMI ports, which isn't exactly stingy.
More intriguingly LG also boast that the range sports a hidden speaker set designed by Mark Levinson, which apparently both allows the sets to incorporate a sleeker design and improve the listening experience by creating a ‘wall of sound'. As much as that may sound like media spin, Levinson is a well respected designer so we expect good things.
Upping the ante a bit we move along to the plasma-based PG6000 series. This time there are only two sizes available, 47in and 50in models but to compensate they boast a pretty crazy 30,000:1 contrast ratio, possibly posing a threat to Pioneer's Kuro sets, even taking the dynamic backlighting into account. Four HDMI ports are also present here, as is the invisible speaker set and LG has even managed to pull THX certification - no mean feat. LG has also implemented what it calls a frameless panel design, which in real terms amounts to a single pane of glass making up the entire front of the TV - rather than a bevelled border.
No pricing information is available as yet for either the LCD or plasma ranges, but expect both be pretty expensive. Availability is slated for sometime in the next few weeks and those among you who believe that your TVs should be as much of a fashion statement as a good performer will probably want to have a word with your bank managers and get that loan sorted.
