LG Confirms KC910: 8MP, Viewty Successor

We hoped and prayed this was real when it was leaked back in August and, oh yes, it is...

The LG 'KC910' (no fancy naming this time it seems) is one heck of a follow-up to the popular Viewty and there's so much to fit in here let's just cut to the chase. Now confirmed:

  • Quad-band GSM/ 7.2Mbps HSDPA

  • 8MP camera with Xenon flash, Schneider-Kreuznach lens, geotagging and smile/blink detection

  • 3in 400 x 240 touchscreen display

  • GPS

  • WiFi

  • microSD expansion slot

  • Video recording at up to 120fps

  • Multimedia playback including DivX and XviD support

  • TV output

  • Bluetooth 2.0

  • Just 107.8 x 55.9 x 13.9mm and 114g (it is indeed lighter than an iPhone)
Somewhat strangely the amount of onboard storage still remains a mystery but this is definitely time for some self congratulating:

“The LG-KC910 follows the success of the LG Viewty, the brand’s multi million selling camera phone. LG has once again combined a high-end camera with a full size touchscreen interface to provide the ultimate multimedia experience – in yet another world first device,” said LG Mobile Communications President and CEO Dr. Skott Ahn. "According to our customers, touchscreen is essential for fully utilising high-end multimedia features and the LG-KC910’s interface has been developed to meet these requirements.”

Ironically I guess this is the one area where there remains a big question mark over the KC910: just how good is the UI and how responsive is the touchscreen. After all the Viewty's resistive touch tech suffered heavily compared to the original iPhone's capacitive touch so we hope LG has cleared this one up.

It's about time someone reminded Apple they were still in the game…

Catch the KC910 in October.

I really hope this will be the "iphone killer". The iphone has been sitting on the multimedia throne for mobile technology for so long now that am sick of it. Funny thing is am a mac user :) but i just couldn't bring myself to upgrade to the 3G handset because i feel it is an unfinished product. The LG specs looks very good on paper but i cant wait for someone o get their hands-on it. So LG..its time to send your baby into the wild.

I've used the original Viewty since around a month after the retail release. The UI doesn't compare to the iphone, but it is still very usable. Besides which, the huge feature list more than makes up for it. Native DivX support is a godsend and it doubles as an excellent modem for my notebook. 120fps video also never seems to lose it's novelty value.

It will be a cold day in hell before I use an iphone or any other polished up mobile with a feature list that is shamed by other phones released in 2004 or earlier.

Hopefully this new Viewty successor will bring the UI up to standard, although the marketing spend of Apple will do their very best to drown it.

Though I love how this phone looks, it is at a serious disadvantage to the Omnia for the fact that is has LG's own software on it. While I prefer Symbian to Windows Mobile, both have an endless number of application add-ons available. This makes the Omnia a better fit for my needs.
