LG 3rd Largest Phone Maker, Motorola Falls Again

Good news for LG or bad news for Motorola? Probably both...

Unofficial projected sales for the top five mobile phone manufacturers were released late yesterday evening and they show an interesting reshuffle: LG has moved up to become the world's third largest handset maker and Motorola is down to fourth.

The breakdown of the figures are skin of our teeth close too with Nokia believed to have shipped a whopping 470m mobiles, Samsung a hugely impressive 200m, LG managing 100m, Motorola 99.9m (yep, I said tight!) and Sony Ericsson right behind it with 96.6m.

Now put your sceptical hats on for a minute because 1. As mentioned these are projected figures and don't allow for much margin of error and 2. They come from an LG source. I know, I know. That said, you'd have to think leaks from inside the company would be pretty daft if they weren't supremely confident of their running order in all this.

Third or fourth place nitpicking aside however perhaps of equal importance is just how far Samsung has come since it snuck past Motorola to go second in July 2007. At that time the margin was 37.4m handsets shipped in Q2 verses 36m yet 18 months on the gap between the two companies has more than doubled. This coming even with the recent Samsung split in order to maintain maximum profitability.

In fact, with Sony Ericsson really struggling it is interesting to see it is still closing the gap on Motorola and I wouldn't be surprised to see it grab fourth place before 2009 is out. This despite both firms being placed under tremendous pressure following a string of poor financial results and even questions over their existences being raised.

It's a dog-eat-dog world out there, people and one we're going to have to get used to for now.
