Kindle Update Brings New Layout and Page Numbers

Amazon has announced that it will be rolling out a software update for the latest generation of its all-conquering Kindle e-reader.

While Amazon has promised the update will be sent out to all new Kindles (both 3G and Wi-Fi) but for those of us who just couldn’t wait, it has made an early preview of the update available to download from its website. We successfully installed the new update and had a look at what new functionality it will bring to an already excellent piece of kit.

The first thing we noticed was the improved layout of the newspapers and magazines section. Previously the opening page just showed the various sections of our morning newspaper with the number of articles in each section. Not very informative and led to much scrolling through our morning e-paper to find the article we wanted. What 3.1 brings is a preview pane on the right-hand side which allows us to see all the articles in a particular section and go directly to that piece. This is a nice improvement and should save a lot of frustrated commuters a lot of scrolling in the morning.

The next 'improvement' sees actual page numbers appearing at the bottom of the screen instead of the ‘location’ number we previously had to look at. Apparently the change was brought about as a result of reader feedback, but the improvement is negligible in our opinion but it’s nice to have the choice we guess. Tens of thousands of books have got page numbers added to them already with more to follow. To see these magical page numbers just tap the Menu button in an open book and voila!

The Public Notes feature will let Kindle users choose to make their book notes and highlights available for others to see. This is an opt-in feature so you can keep your musings and clipping all to yourself if you like. The final update is called Before You Go… (ellipsis are Amazon’s, not ours) which invites you to immediately rate the book you've been reading, share a message about the book with your social network, get personalised recommendations for what to read next and see more books by the same author.

All information about the update and the various files up need to download to get the early preview can be obtained at the source link below. And just to note the image of the page numbers above on the Eat, Pray, Love book was a screen shot from Amazon and not a reflection of the literature we enjoy here at TrustedReviews.
