Fact or fiction?
That is the big question to arise from the mysterious standalone '01' phone website which has popped up from nowhere today showing a futuristic iPhone-esque device with a countdown clock. No manufacturer hints, no data, zip.
Of course from simple observation what we can see is a touchscreen handset with a finger friendly interface similar to that of mobile OS X, a scaling web browser, 3G connectivity (spot the giveaway front facing camera), a memory expansion slot and - most radically - a horizontal sliding action which reveals a laser to cast a virtual keypad with standard Qwerty layout.
Interestingly, while no further specifications have been revealed T3.com claims the 01 will come with 32GB of memory and a five megapixel camera. Should this be true the latter spec would ground the handset more firmly in reality since conceptual artists tend to push the hardware envelope into currently impossible standards (after all, why not just say it was 8MP or 12MP?).
That said, anyone notice something fishy about T3 having this additional data and the T3 website being the site of shown on the handset. Hmmmmn.
Still, cynicism aside, could this be yet another Motorola make or break model? Something from Sony Ericsson? Nokia? Or indeed the over active imagination of a teenager/T3 employee who spends too much time on Photoshop?
I guess we'll all know within 29 days, 5 hours, 11 minutes, 20 seconds and counting...
Update: We're rather quickly getting to the bottom of this and it's undoubtedly fake and a bizarre marketing stunt which looks set to backfire. As eagle eyed reader Gary Gatter has spotted:
"...the countdown is fake (restarts when you refresh). This was pointed out on http://www.pause.com/index.php/t3-pretends-their-01-phone-website-is-real/#more-298
I think this may backfire, reporting fake products is never a good idea."
Have to say we're with you there Gary... odd. Very odd indeed.
