Yes I know you hate financial results stories, yes I'm posting this anyway because these figures are mind blowing...

Intel has announced its "best quarter ever" having declared its Q2 2010 financial results. What does 'best quarter ever' mean when you're a monstrous corporate like Intel? Brace yourself.

Revenue for the last three months hit $10.8 billion, up 34 per cent on Q2 2009 while operating income came in at $4 billion and net income of $2.9 billion. To put these in context Nokia - responsible for 33 per cent of all mobile phones sold around the world - made $1bn net income during the whole of 2009. In its field Intel's nearest rival AMD had revenue, operating income and net income of $5.4bn, $664m and $243m during the whole of 2009!

"Strong demand from corporate customers for our most advanced microprocessors helped Intel achieve the best quarter in the company's 42-year history," said an understandably chuffed Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO. "Our process technology lead plus compelling architectural designs increasingly differentiate Intel-based products in the marketplace. The PC and server segments are healthy and the demand for leading-edge technology will continue to increase for the foreseeable future."

With Intel also soon entering the highly lucrative smartphone sector for the first time with its Atom Z processor it looks like the Santa Clara based giant still has the potential to grow substantially larger yet. Which is a truly frightening thought...
