New Intel Dual Core CULV CPUs Imminent

Have you been wooed by one of the recent sleek, sexy and surprisingly affordable new Intel CULV based laptops? Well you might want to start taking cold showers for the next few months...

While it never seems a good time to buy a piece of technology, this looks set to be more the case than usual with CULV processors. The Register reports that the whole single core line is set to migrate to dual core as soon as Q4.

The move will see the CULV Core SU3xxx series replaced by the dual core SU7xxx line with single core SU2xxx Pentium and 7xx Celeron ranges also making the dual core leap to SU4xxx and (higher) 7xx models. The existing dual core CULV SU9xxx dual core CPUs will continue, but also be found lower down the food chain in more affordable laptops.

The move makes a great deal of sense given the arrival of AMD's dual core Athlon X2 L310 processor in the Acer Ferrari One. Until now Intel hasn't had a highly affordable dual core mobile processor to counter it, but you don't become a global chip overlord without knowing how to quickly plug gaps.

On the other hand it will be interesting to see how manufacturers will deal with the inevitably larger power draw of these dual core lines. Then again, with the likes of the new Toshiba CULV Satellites claiming battery life of up to 11 hours it would seem there is a fair margin to play with...
