I don't know what Apple thinks it is doing with the iPod, but the world's most popular music player hasn't had a decent upgrade in 18 months and previously niche companies like Archos are stepping up to fill the gap.

Like a lot of players now on the market, the newly announced '704 WiFi' offers a host of options its famously scratch prone rival has only promised but not delivered on. There's 802.11g, a full facia 7in 800 x 480 touch screen display, Opera web browser, integrated PDF reader, stereo speakers and support for Mpeg4, AVI and WMV video formats and MP3 and WMA audio files. Optional codecs add AAC, H.264 and Mpeg2 support.

Battery life is good for five hours 30 minutes of video playback, 25 hours audio and with an 80GB HDD you won't be pushed for space. The tacky horizontal side buttons seen on the 604 WiFi have thankfully disappeared and there's even an optional DVR Station dock.

Weighing in at 623g the 704 WiFi is a darn sight less portable than your average PMP but considering what's on offer it may prove an excellent alternative for users looking for something rather different. Coming at the end of March with a $549.99 (£285) price tag, the player is just £25 more than an 80GB so if video is your bag think long and hard before your next purchase...
