ITV Player on its Way to PS3

ITV Player on its Way to PS3

Sony has announced that the ITV Player streaming service will be joining the BBC iPlayer on its PlayStation 3 console for UK users.

The company made the revelation at its press conference at Gamescom, but did not give an exact time-frame for its arrival.

However, it did give an arrival date for a new movie streaming service on PS3 called Mubi and this will appear on the console in October. Despite ongoing rumours, there was no mention of LoveFilm or Channel 4’s 4OD coming to the PS3.

In addition, Sony announced a new PlayStation 3 bundle, featuring a 320GB hard disk, its PlayStation Move hardware and the Move enabled game Sports Champions for a total cost of £265. Meanwhile a 160GB version will take over from the current 120GB model as standard.

Game fans will also be delighted to see than the incredibly long-awaited Gran Turismo 5 title gets a UK release date of 3 November – yes, 2010, while Sega’s forthcoming Virtua Tennis 4 will be Move enabled, which should make it incredibly realistic to play.

Finally, Little Big Planet 2 was also announced as arriving in the US on 16 November, though we await confirmation of a UK release date.

My first though was "yes - I want the ITV player" ... then I realised that I hardly ever watch any ITV programs at all. Still it's better to have it then not I guess.

It would also be great to have 4OD & LoveFilm too added to it as well. And why not 5 on demand as well if we're throwing them all in. Looking forward to GT5 when it FINALLY arrives too.

That is one very reasonably priced package IMO.

A slight shame about no Lovefilm announcement but judging on how poor the quality of their streaming is when the laptop is plugged in to the TV it probably isnt the end of the world.

As for ITV player - I think I can safely say this is something I will never use. ITV is mince!

Sorry, I should say ITV and especially STV are mince.

They better have old shows on there - Cold Feet, Cracker, Prime Suspect. They haven't made anything decent in 10 years. (Not such a problem for the BBC who still have world renowned news and political affairs output.)

Great news. I don't watch loads of itv but would rather have it than not.

MS have really messed up with not offering these video services to Xbox users. Their greed at trying to limit them to paying customers ijust leads to everyone missing out.

I use my PS3 everyday but I can't remember the last time I played a game on it.

It's not the best UI but Demand Five works fine through the web browser.

Presumably the image quality will be the same as BBC iplayer on the PS3 - complete and utter garbage.

I don't watch a lot of STV output, but like others I'd rather have it than not. The BBC iplayer saved my Dr. Who episodes that got missed due to Sky+ conflicts, I'm certain this will come in handy someday too. The more the merrier, roll on the future where I can tell Sky where to shove it or delight in thier on-demand service (which ever future pans out I'm happy there).

4OD would be much more useful than ITV. Does that work through the web browser, anyone?

I have a friend who has a LoveFilm enabled internet TV. He says the streaming quality is terrible, and he prefers the postal service. So I can believe Jones's comment here.
